ASE stands for Automotive Service Excellence. ASE certifications are administered by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, which is an independent non-profit organization. The purpose of the organization is to improve quality and promote excellence in the auto repair and service industry. It does this by testing and certifying automotive professionals so that customers and shop owners can better understand a technician's level of quality and experience before working with that technician.

As well as passing an ASE certification test, there are additional requirements for becoming ASE Certified. Technicians must either have 1) two years of on the job training or 2) one year of on the job training and a two-year degree in automotive repair. Certified technicians must also retest every five years in order to retain their certification status.

There are dozens of certifications offered by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. ASE Certifications are organized in several speciality segments, ranging from Automobiles and Light Trucks (A Series) to Transit (H Series) and School (S Series) buses to Parts Specialists (P Series).
